How to make the Sony Ericsson W960i work with iSync

In case you hadn’t guessed I’ve just upgraded to the new Sony Ericsson W960i, now I’m still not 100% sold on the phone itself (more info to follow as I decide) but I’m jumping in with both feet and making it my primary phone right away.  In order to do that I need to be able to sync the phone with my Macbook (without which my life would fall apart), the problem is that blessed Sony Ericsson have thusfar failed to release a plugin for iSync.

Fortunately the Internet came to the rescue (see here), in case the file there gets knocked off of the file host I’ve decided to host the files myself here: Sony Ericsson W960i iSync Plugin.

All you need to do is extract the contents of the zip and place the entire ’Contents’ folder in the following directory under Macintosh HD:

/library/PhonePlugins/SonyEricsson_W960i_isync_plugin_v1_07.phoneplugin/

Restart iSync and you should be able to connect to the phone, it worked a treat for me and I even received a call whilst the phone was in the middle of the sync and the call had the real contact’s name on it!

I will submit a more detailed review soon but for now it’s worth noting that the aside from the lack of an iSync plugin (which I’m certain will come) the W960i does work as a Mass Storage device out of the box and charges from USB so whilst there’s no actual software it’s Mac-friendly enough that I can get away without switching on the dreaded Beige Box in the corner.

    Hope you enjoy your W960i.
    I just bought a little extra for my own the Bluetooth-set MBR-100. Just plug it in to your audiospeaker, home audioset or car-audio and you can listen music from your phone as long as the phone is inside the five meter area from the Bluetooth-set. This rocks, really. Friend has an iPhone and he was astonished to see how well it worked.

    If the directories don’t exist you’ll have to create them, it worked fot me.

    Right-click in the blank space where you want to put the new directory and then pick New Folder.

    hi
    i have downloaded the plugin, then when i search for the device on isync, it finds it, but says its not supported.
    i think i am running isync 2.4, do you know anything about this and what i need to do to make it work?

    It’s a great phone and you’ve given everyone some great advice…but forgive me…I’ve downloaded the file, inserted into the library and it still appears to tell me that my W960 is not supported by iSync……!! Sorry, but am I putting it in the wrong library or doing something wrong, since everyone else seems to be very pleased with your fantastic advice! Thanks in advance. Andi

    I bought 2 w960i phones back in March. It is a great device. My son’s works flawlessly but my own one does crash sometimes which is more than slightly annoying because unless you try to make a call you don’t have a clue and I have missed several incoming calls as a result. Whatever it is doing while it is crashed sucks the heck out of the battery too. The only way to restart it is to pull the battery and replace. When it powers back up the battery has been drained way beyond what it should have been and if it is an over-night crash for example the battery will be completely exhausted. Seems to happen a lot if I am using WiFi or email but not so bad just used for phone/text etc. Not a problem as long as I check it regularly but a bit of a pain because I need it for email these days. Had an argument with the Vodafone shop manager about replacing it 2 days outside their 14 day replacement policy. Thanks Vodafone. I’ve been with you since 1986 and I expect better service even if you do employ a complete tosser as a manager at your Woking branch! Everyone else in the company was bending over backwards to help me except you. I have a name for people like that! :)
    Anyone else experienced a crash? As I said my son’s works absolutely flawlessly so I am swiping his when he gets his upgrade this month – he wants the 980i now :) Apart from the problems the phone is awesome. Big enough to do serious stuff on but not so big as to be cumbersome like most PDAs.
    As for Macs, I bought an Air which I love, obviously, but as a Windows Professional I struggle to find anything that it can actually do that is useful to me other than browse the web, email although it doesn’t connect well with my Exchange Server, a bit of word processing and a little graphics (it is way underpowered to run Parallels and what would be the point?).
    Hopefully this will change now that Apple are finally getting a decent market share and software manufacturers will get their acts together and give us the drivers and applications that we need!

    Hi there, after I have read and followed your description, my w960 and the isync on the macbook is working well. Thank you for this hint! But of course, there is the further question: did you manage to make the w960i work also as a bluetooth modem? My Macbook always tells me, that the item is not existing… while it syncs via isync ?!

    How does this plug-in, or rather isync, work? Mine is wierd. Sometimes it’s only syncing from phone to mac, and soemtimes it’s the other way round. I really couldn’t predict it.

    hi, i’ve make a folder named

    PhonePlugins/SonyEricsson_W960i_isync_plugin_v1_07.phoneplugin/

    in my library folder in my G5 tower HD..but the isync still can’t detect my w960 but my phone already connected with data cable n showed in my desktop…
    FYI my isync 5.3.2 version. Thank you so much bro for your help :)
